Europhysics Letters was founded in 1986 by the European Physical Society (EPS), the Société Française de Physique (SFP) and its subsidiary EDP Sciences, the Società Italiana di Fisica (SIF) and the UK Institute of Physics (IOP). Re-branded as EPL in 2007, the journal is published under the scientific policy and control of the EPS for a not-for-profit partnership composed of 17 European physical societies (the EPL Association). EPL publishes original, high-quality Letters in all areas of physics, ranging from condensed matter topics and interdisciplinary research to astrophysics, geophysics, plasma and fusion sciences, including those with application potential.

EPL frequently provides cash prizes for best poster displays or oral presentations by young researchers attending conferences, workshops, summer schools, or other events. The Directors of the EPL Association appreciate the importance of the EPS Young Minds scheme in providing a platform for organising collaborative events involving scientific activities, networking opportunities and outreach projects amongst young researchers As a new venture the EPL Directors have decided to assist the project by donating a cash prize in order to support and encourage young researchers. EPL now provides a cash prize for the Best Activity Award at the annual EPS Young Minds event together with an opportunity to have the winning poster published in the journal and displayed on the EPL website.
